WHAT: 2-Tank Yukon Dusk & Night Dive
TIME: 2:30pm Check-in. 3:00pm Departure. ~ 6:30pm Return
DIVE BOAT: Humboldt (Waterhorse Charters)
Boldly join Rod Roddenberry and Roddenberry Adventures for our famous Red Shirt Dive on the Yukon in San Diego. We will enjoy two exhilarating dives on the Humboldt (Waterhorse Charters). Sunset is around 4:45pm so we will explore the Yukon for a dusk and night dive. A night dive on the Yukon is considered and advanced skill. We require that you have an Advanced Dive Certification (or 20+ logged dives in cold, deep water), night dive experience, and are comfortable diving in cold, deep water and at night.
The expected return time will be around 7:30pm, however it depends on weather, water conditions, dive times, etc. Always allow for the unexpected! The average surface water temperature in San Diego in December is 59 degrees. Water temp can drop significantly at depth, so bundle up accordingly. At a minimum, wear a 7mm wetsuit or drysuit, hood, booties and gloves.
The Humboldt, is a 45′ custom dive boat, and can hold 22 divers, however we are limiting this trip to 16 divers. Divers will enjoy hot soup and warm beverages between dives, and there is a fresh hot water shower on board.
The boat provides tanks (low pressure steel 85s) and weights. You may bring your own tank if you prefer, please email Waterhorse and let them know beforehand. Nitrox tanks provided for an extra charge and must be reserved in advance. You provide all other gear. Please remember to bring a valid Nitrox certification card along with your standard certification card.
For those who enjoy the mystery and excitement of wreck diving and those for enjoy seeing the uniqueness and diversity of life during night dives this will be an amazing experience to get the best of both worlds! On this mission, everyone’s a “Red Shirt”. We look forward to seeing you on the Yukon for an adventure!
If you have any questions regarding this dive trip, please contact us at adventures@roddenberry.com.
Gear can be rented from Waterhorse Charters in advance (at least 72 hours prior to trip date.
The HMCS Yukon is a Canadian Mackenzie Class Destroyer. At 366′ feet in length, the Yukon is one of California’s largest wrecks accessible by divers and is the most intact wreck divers can visit.
She was intentionally sunk in July of 2000 by the San Diego Oceans Foundation as part of the artificial reef project, known as Wreck Alley. An abundance of entry and exit holes were cut into her to increase accessibility as well as diver safety. Penetration is readily available for those with the proper certifications. However, there is plenty to see on the exterior including both forward and aft gun turrets.
Unfortunately, the sinking of her was never executed. The night before her sinking, water entered the holes cut low to the waterline and shortly after midnight, her bow headed for the bottom. She lies on her port side in about 100′ of water with an average minimum depth of about 75 feet along the starboard side.
For those of you unfamiliar with the nomenclature term “Red Shirts” refer to characters on “Star Trek,” primarily Security Officers, that would beam down to a planet with the “away party”. Unfortunately these characters would generally be the first to startle a local life form and as a result would be removed from existence by said life form… essentially, they were always the first to die.
We anticipate that all “Red Shirts” will return safely from this mission. We are using this term in a comical manner to express that this dive event is to be considered a more advanced and difficult dive.
The landing for Waterhorse Charters and the Humboldt is located on Mission Bay harbor near the Hyatt Islandia. Click here for map and directions.
